hardware profiles

On my Dell Inspiron 8200 with Windows XP operating sysyem, when I chose a hardware profile on startup, the machine defaults to original profile no matter what I choose. I have tried deleting the profiles and starting over with no luck. I noticed in the registry that there is no ControL Set 001, but there is 002,003 and 004.
