Help? Deleting app in Win registry

I’m trying to install a win2K upgrade program for my printer w/c was originally win98. Message says cannot install since previous version already exists. I uninstalled the previous version and tried the installation. It still is finding the previousversion somewhere(registry?). Does removing the entry in the win registry clear the system of references to the previous version? Help?
