How do I get into a IT job?

Hi:
I received a AA degree in PC Maintenance in May of 2001. Sending out lots resumes isn’working for me. I am presently studying for the A+ exam. I cant help wondering if it’s worth it beccause of the slow job market. How do I go about getting experience? I appreciate your help. Thanks Ed
