How do you test if a modem works?

Hello All,

I’m a complete newbie and I have little hardware knowledge…but I’m trying to learn. I would appreciate any input on how to troubleshoot a modem. Whenever I try to dial in to my ISP, I get a 630 error. Thank you for your help.
