How to avoid compressing a drive?

I formatted my harddisk yesterday. It boots up OK and the drives can be accessed. But when I tried to install Windows 95 from the CD, it said there is a compressed drive which I need remove. I tried to find it, but could not. How can I avoid compressing a drive when formatting it?
