How to clean up IDE “child” devices in W

I am familiar with cleaning up Windows 9X Device Manager in “Safe Mode” for duplicate device listings, and for devices listed that are no longer in the system. I have never been able to figure out how to get rid of the extra Primary and Secondary IDE “child” devices however. Please tell me how!
