hp cd-writer 9350 i

I just installed this cdr on my hp XL916,desktop System.I am lost because, I cannot figure out how to record from my computer to the cdr. When I finally do get it to record, I cannot play the CD back on my portable CD player. Confused and frustrated.How can I connect the ribbon from the new drive to the existing ribbon, because there is only one main plug in.Is it possible to Piggy back the two ribbons?
