HP external cd writer problems

My company just purchased a HP cd writer (external) 8000sereies. We connected it to a Compaq Deskpro pent 2 running windows 98. The cd writer works well, but we constantly recieved the blue screen of death when we shut down or sometimes when we switch between programs. This only happened after we installed the cd burner. We tried reinstalling the software etc. Any help wouls really be appreciated.
