HP Pavillion shutdown problem

ok, the specs are: HP Pavillion XG843 Celeron 800mgz, 128 ram, 20gig hd, CD-Writer plus…
The problem is shutdown… I’ve tried just about everything in the knoledgebase and cannot find the solution. Ive re-formatted…(all done properly) and it was workin fine..
as soon as I did the Windows Update for ME, it started. I did all that it said on: http://www.hp.com/cposupport/personal_computing/support_doc/bph07148.html and no luck. Has anyone had the same problem? Its a friends computer and Iwelcome anyone with the solution! Thx.
