ibm thinkpad 560e infrared

I am having difficulty in making the infrared port work on this machine. The monitor screen comes up and it searches but doesn’t recognise other devices. Win 98 insists on recognising the device as a generic ir port, and has also loaded virtula ir com and lpt ports. It is enabled in BIOS. What am I getting wrong?
