Imac KB/Mouse disappears

Folks,
I have an Imac (V9.x with updates) that constantly loses the KB or Mouse or both. The system appears hung but the fix is to unplug the KB/Mouse, waqit a sec and plg it back in. Suspect the driver is AWOL and the USB reacqyuires it upon unplug/plug. Any advice gratefully received
