Installed more RAM and PC became slower.

I have a Sony vaio 300MHZ, 192MB RAM, 6GB. I installed an extra 128MB of RAM thinking my applications would work faster, but the opposite happened. My PC is slower and freezing up more often. The control panel/system folder/general info does show I have the extra memory. Any ideas?
