installing win98se on to HP Pavilion

I formated my HP Pavilion and want to install win98se, to be free of HP controls on the system. I want a basic install of win98se, not any of the stuff that came with the computer. Hp stops the install half way through claiming a missing file is at falt( c:\windows\system\vmm32.vxd ). How can I work around this problem and be free of HP control?
