Internet speed

Is there some setting I can tweak in Windows XP that will help my Internet connection speed up a little? It may be my imagination, but since I’ve bought my new HP with WinXP it seems to run even slower than the old Compaq. Yeah, I’m just dial-up, but it seems slower.
