“Keyboard error or no keyboard present”

Hi all:
I have a Pentium 100 clone running Win98. On bootup I get separate but constant beeps and the message “Keyboard error or no keyboard present” The beeps stop when I unplug the keyboard. I have tried swapping the KB with a known good one to no avail. The Kb is an older connection type. I forgot the name for the connector. I am thinking this could be a socket problem or a motherboard problem. Thanks.
