lexmark 1200 color problem

We have a lexmark 1200 Optracolor printer. It works fine with most applications but we are using Printshop 10 to do our company posters, newsletters etc. When we send a print job to the printer (a simple border and three lines of text), it spools a 7 Mb or greater print job. Have tried printing directly to printer, print as a bitmap, lowering resolution, changing printer drivers, but no luck. Any other ideas except get a real desktop publishing program?
