loading win98

Hi,
I have bought another p.c.(secondhand) and have loaded win98 into it. The problem is it doesn’t start up with win98, it goes to the win98 start up page for me to choose which mode to start in? Then win98 loads, what have I done wrong, can anyone help, I am an amateur!!
I also was prompted that my token ring adaptor NDS14(0002) was not working properly and was advised to remove it, which I’ve done. It is an IBM PCI pentium pro 180, 1.6gb and has extended memory of 192mb. Any advise gratefully received!!
