Microsoft Office 97 SR2

We’re currently using Windows 98 2nd edition. Late last year I installed the above in order to prepare for Y2K. But after installing this I noticed that the close (x) button in Excel became grayed out. The only way to close this application is by choosing Exit from the File menu. Does anyone know how I can get the Close button back?
