Modem disconnections

I have an internal 56k v90 modem. After a few minutes of connecting to my ISP I am disconnected. When I set up my old 56k external modem I get connections of 2hrs or more. I think this rules out my ISP and telephone line. I am running a pentium 500 with Windows 98. Help do I have a faulty modem
