modem troubleshooting in WinME

I cannot seem to get my modem working after reformatting. I reloaded my OS (WinME) but when I try to set up dial up networking it cannot locate the modem. When I try to use the manufacturer’s disk to set it up, that program cannot locate my com port(s)? Yet the device manager shows both com ports and modem are installed and working properly, proper drivers installed. And…when I try to access the modem properties from the control panel I get the error “cannot display properties because the modem information is corrupt”. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.
