Monitor quits after a few hours

I have a PII-266 computer that for some strange
reason the monitor starts clicking on and off
affter a few hours of use. The power supply is
making a whirring noise, which might be part of
the problem but I am not sure. I have checked the
videocard and it is seated ok. Does anyone have
any ideas as to what could be wrong?
