Mouse cursor jumping

I have a Dell laptop with built-in pointer, one of those “erasers.’ It works fine. Still, when I plug in an extrenal mouse from time to time the cursor jumps sporadically around the screen. Same mouse works OK on other machines. I recall seeing there might be some kind of software/driver issue that can cuase this, but I cannot recall where I saw that. What do you think?
