Mouse Pointer Changes Shape

My WIN98 mouse pointer sometimes changes shape to a square box of speckled colors about 1″ on a side, usually when the screen saver comes on and sometimes with other applications.

Any pointers would be appreciated for investigating and curing this annoying problem. Thanks!
