Mouse stops working on laptop

The plugged in mouse on my laptop almost daily stops working and I have to reboot to get it going again. I have Windows 98 second edition installed. It’s an Intellimouse PS/2 compatible by Microsoft. I end up using the mouse in the middle of my keyboard until I reboot. Any suggestions why this is happening or fixes for it. I’ve looked and can’t find anything.
