mouse with a mind of its own

The system is a 166mhz ,32mb ram,win98SE,and the mouse is a serial.The mouse opens the right button menus on its own and will jump from side of the screen to the other, Ive removed and reinstalled it that did not work.
The only software that was loaded recently was hp printer software (hp laser 4/plus)
Any help would be appriciated.
