Mouse with a mind of it’s own

I have a computer with a mouse that moves about the screen on it’s own, almost as if it were being controled remotely. I flits around clicking on icons and startmenu items and bringing up property dialog boxes.
I have ruled out remote control by anunknown user by taking it off the network.

The OS is windows 2000. Does anyone have any ideas on what could be the problem??
