MPU-401? Why no sound? K7VMA MB onbrd.

I have a K7VMA motherboard (Athlon 950 slot A) with onboard sound card. I have lost my sound. I was having memory problems and changed several things that included deleting some systems devices and resetting them up. Somehow I have lost my sound card! Windows 98 finds an Audio 97 Controller and installs it and the joystick, but it doesn’t have sound. I think I had MPU-401 before, but when I try to install a MPU-401 compatible (Control panel and hard ware setup) it doesn’t install. I have the original motherboard disks and reintalling doesn’t work either. I can’t figure out what to do next. I have made extensive BIOS changes, and then went back to what I had (tried “default”, “fail-safe”, “optimum” and individual changes). I don’t think it is in the BIOS. But I can’t seem to figure out WHERE IT IS. Any suggestions would be WONDERFUL!
