ms caldera dos ver 7

i’ve got caldera dos ver 7 installed on my laptop’s new hard drive. when i run fdisk to format the drive and create partitions it says defective cylinders. so i don’t know how to format the drive and load win 98 se on the computer. or is the drivebad.
