MS Word Files Become NOTEPAD files

I have a usr who when she creates files in MS Word(Office95), running on Windows NT 4.0, upon saving them they become notepad files. they are in a shared directory, and the others who share the files have the same problem.

she has tried after the initial save to open Word first, then open the file and they still open as Notepad files, and come up garbled.

the are straight English text documents, with no Graphics or Foriegn text cut into them.
