My sound is NOT working – Please HELP!

I have a Compaq Presario 4834….I upgraded to Windows 2000 Professionally and after that I lost the Sound!! I believe the m/c came with ESS Audio 1887 (PLug and Play), but apparently I don’t have the win2000 driver for that (the ‘Other Multimedia’ device in the device manager has an ‘!’ mark next to it). I contacted ESS and they say that the win2000 drivers for ESS 1997 should be in the windows CD, but I don’t think it does. Compaq says it does NOT support win2000 on that machine (bought in 1996).

Ironically, sound did work in the previous windows Me version.
