Network Cabling

The company I work for is moving to a new building and when getting bid for wiring our phone and network we we told that we should use one cable for both(16 wire? I think they said) instead of running lines for the phone and seperate cat5 cable for network. Is it wise to do that? I always thought they should be seperate. What possible trouble might it cause?
