Network Sniffers and Other Utilities

I am curious if anyone knows of any shareware sniffer utilities i could obtain to montitor network traffic, performance, load, and connectivity?

I know there are several commecial packages available. I really want to get a sense of the intuitive nature of the data collected by these utilities, their use, and hopefully troublshoot connectivity issues, bad NICs etc.

Any help would be greately appreciated
