New MAC user – HELP

I recently came across a great deal on some used iMac Powerbook G3’s (3 of them that my whole family will use). However, I can’t get the CD player to work on 2 of them. The machine recognizes the disk and even plays 2 seconds of it but it quits. These 3 machines all have the same hardware and the only difference in the software I can tell is the working one has Mac OS 9.0 and the other two have 9.2. Can someone please shed some light on this so my husband, daughter and I are not fighting over who gets the working CD player for our music?
