new to the IT profession

I am just starting technical classes for a career in the IT industry. The school I have chosen has indicated very strongly that a comptia A+ certification as a base prior to a mcsd certification in important. Is this truely an asset on a resume? Also, I am deciding whether to begin with an mcse or mcsd certificate. Is one more marketable than the other?
