No sound but from audio CD

Windows98se with ess1810 integated chipset. Sound was was working and suddenly quit.Device Drivers for sounds show devices are working.The sound drivers have been removed and reinstalled many times without any changes. New sound drivers downloaded from IBM data base without change. Same problem as Gventura@msn.com and Peifer. Did they ever get a resolution to their problem?
