no soundcard

I recently tried out a few media players, like REAL, and Musicmatch, none were to my liking, so I uninstalled them. One of them took with them my sound card, and the sound card can’t be found in device managers, except in safe mode. I tried inserting Win98 disc, like I was prompted to, but it couldn’t find a file called: serial.v?? It also took out my driver for the printer, but I was able to reinstall it. Is there any fix for this?
