Noisy Notebook

I have a new Compaq Presario which has started making rhythmic whir/click noises in the background…almost as if there is some permananet disk activity of some kind. Checking the system activity doesn’t show anything strange. This also happened onmy previous laptop after a hard disk problem and I am wondering whether I have transferred some program/virus or whatever to new machine. Has anyone heard of similar problem ?
