Not a valid win32 application

I am trying to install 2 different programs on a Compaq system and will get the error “Not a valid win32 application”. The games will load fine on another PC. I have tried formatting and reinstalling the original hard drive, then even installing a new hard drive, but still get “Not a valid win32 application”. What can be done to get these to install?
