NT Workstation Display Problem

NT 4.0 Workstation installed with Viewsonic monitor. Changed to AST monitor – now booting to normal mode leaves display unreadable. I can boot to VGA mode just fine. BTW, monitor works fine with NT server and displays 65,000 colors. What do I need to do to get the NTW to boot with normal display settings?
