NTFS max partition size

I have only read about NTFS in books until now. The books state NTFS partition size is unlimited…sizes con go into terrabytes. Why is it the max partition size I can create is 4gb? I cannot figure this out. IS the book wrong or is there something that should be done. Any insight would be helpful
