Old Obsolete Hardware Disposal/Recycling

I would like to know if there are any means to dispose/recycle old, redundant and obsolete hardware including motherboards, add-on cards, printers, monitors, scanners and other electronic items as well.
Just throwing these electronics in the garbage may not be environmentally friendly also. The Micro-chips and other components may be recycled I am sure. Any of our members got any clues please?
