on bootup CD-ROM is “ATAPI Incompatible”

I replaced the cd-rom drive in a Pentium II 350 MHz. AMI BIOS 8/5/1998. A soft boot (hitting the reset button) recognizes the cd-rom drive. A cold boot does not and gives a “ATAPI Incomptatible” error. It is an AOpen cd-rom drive, model 48x, IDE. The cables are connected properly. Thanks in advance.
