opening a serial port

Please i have a cd writer equipment that need to be connceted to a pc. it goes through a firewire and serial port to connect to the pc.
But during test run, the driver complains that it could not open the serial port. How can i make the serial portavailable. My system is a sony desktop with 1.4Ghz processor.
