ORACLE 8i INSTALLATION

I have just installed oracle 8i on my stand alone system but it I have just installed oracle 8i on my stand alone system but it keeps giving the following error;

ERROR:
ORA-12538: TNS:no such protocol adapter

I’d be glad to know if anyone has a clue/solution to this.
