OS won’t boot

I have a PC running Windows 2000 Pro. After downloading an office update, then restarting the computer as it prompted, the OS will not boot. All I get is the initial screen with Processor info, keyboard and mouse detected, etc. Then a blank screen with a flashing cursor appears. Any suggestions for fixing this problem would be greatly appreciated.
