Out of scan Range message

I newer have a dell pc with win98. I have a printer and scanner hooked up. The scanner isnt installed yet(drivers and software-havent found the install disk yet), but the printer is. The computer has bee running for about a month. Then the screen went black and I got a message box in the middle of the screen “Out of Scan Range”. Does anyone know what this means? Any ideas?
