Page Faults with Compaq

I am restoreing a Compaq 1573 with the supply retore disk. After the restore is complete the system is working correctly. I update the browser to IE 5.0 or 5.5 and the system will not open the browser. I recieve the following error.

This programhas performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

IExplore caused an invalid page fault in module SHELL32.DLL at 0157:7fdc10a0.

I have change the system.ini (according to Microsoft) files and this did not correct the problem.
