PC Crashes on playing Audio CDs

Problem:
User with a PC that freezes if an audio Cd is inserted.it reads data Cds fine. Tried the following: 1. Diabling autoplay on CD-ROM. 2. Using Winamp/CD Player to play CD. 3.Used msconfig to remove Startup programs 4. Running scandisk, system file checker, registry checker

Same result each time: PC freezes when I try to play an Audio CD

System is a Compaq Presario 2254 running Win98 1st Ed., AMD 266MHz, 32MB RAM, 4GB Drive

I could use a few more ideas short of reinstalling Windows (which would be impractical…)
