PC Freezes

I’ve just bought a new PC and have loaded a DVD Player onto it. The CD-ROM works fine on the DVD, but when I try and play a DVD, the PC freezes. The same thing happens when I try and play anything interactive on my PC, i.e. realplayer CNN news etc…..any ideas…….?
