PC freezing after disconnect internet

Running Windows ME …. Pc is freezing up after I disconnect my dial up server …… then i have I have to shut down manually … have thoroughly scanned “C” no bad sectors … am pretty much a tech dummy and would appreciate any help in a simplified form …lol…
